FILM REVIEW** What’s your Number?!

What’s your number?!

It’s a question that should never be asked and most definitely should never be answered! I made that mistake when my beau asked me on a night out, I’ve been single for four years and am not shy about answering this (obviously, I write a blog about my dating history for goodness sake!). I made the mistake of just blurting it out, ahhh the benefit of hindsight! It’s not so much that he has a complex over it now, but every so often he makes a joke, is it in jest I hear you cry… the truth is I’m not sure…

So you can imagine how it made me stand up and pay attention when I saw that a new film is coming out on DVD and Blu-ray that depicts a woman who has slept with 20 guys and decides that her soul mate must be one of them – so then proceeds to go out with them again until she finds ‘the-one’. It got me to thinking about when I was single, and how many times I went out with an ex, to try to reignite the flame, and how many times it had actually worked – guess… Yep that’s right a BIG FAT ZERO!

The findings from a recent survey by Twentieth Century Fox found that a shocking two-thirds of Australians have attempted to get back with an ex but only 15% have succeeded!

Which left me to pose the question, with Valentine’s Day fast approaching, exactly how many Australian’s are ‘recycling’ ex-partners, as opposed to looking for brand new romance?

According to the poll*, 65% of people have tried to get back together with an ex-partner with 15% believing it was the best thing ever! The results have shown that like Ally Darling, played by Anna Faris, in the film WHAT’S YOUR NUMBER? Aussies are keen to give relationships another go, in the hope of finding the ‘one’. WHAT’S YOUR NUMBER? is a fresh and funny tale about dating, relationships and ex-boyfriends and is released on Blu-ray and DVD today.

Even if a relationship is dead and buried, it seems Australians are still reluctant to sever all ties. Just 32% of people surveyed deleted an ex on Facebook after they split up with 60% of people stating they use social media sites like Facebook, to keep a track on what their ex is up to. God love a bit of Facebook stalking hey! We’ve all been there! Don’t try and lie! Ha!

For Aussies who are still hoping to rekindle romance with an ex, Anna Faris has a few words of wisdom. “Just because you dumped him once, it doesn’t mean he belongs in the dump. Men are like grass clippings, paper bags, chicken bones and old cars… They can be useful again!” hmmm I beg to differ! Not once have I succeeded, it’s only ever reinforced my theory that if it doesn’t work once, it isn’t going to work again!

In WHAT’S YOUR NUMBER? marketing executive Ally Darling (Anna Faris) begins to panic after reading a magazine article which insists that if a woman has slept with 20 people or more, they have already missed Mr. Right. With the help of her hunky new neighbour (Chris Evans) Ally starts tracking down all her exes, hoping to find her real true love, while she helps him escape his latest fling. Hilarious adventures ensue as Ally goes on her wild search for the best ‘ex’ of her life, only to find what she is looking for has been right in front of her all along.

Featuring hysterical supporting performances from Chris Pratt (Moneyball, Parks and Recreation), Joel McHale (The Soup, Community) and Andy Samberg (Saturday Night Live, Hot Rod), WHAT’S YOUR NUMBER? is based on the book ‘20 Times a Lady’ by Karen Bosnak. It’s also packed with laugh-out-loud bonus material including deleted scenes and gag reel, plus an even raunchier extended cut of the film not seen in cinemas!

WHAT’S YOUR NUMBER? Special Features include:

●         All-new extended cut

●         Deleted scenes (additional deleted scenes on Blu-ray)

●         Gag Reel

*Poll conducted on Twentieth Century Fox Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/#!/foxmoviesaus?sk=app_60082431253

1. Do you stalk an ex using social media?
16% – Hell to the yes!
40% – No, the past is the past.
44% -Sometimes… Who hasn’t?
7,365 votes were cast

2. Ever gotten back with an ex?
15% – Yes, best thing ever!
40% – No way Jose
45% – Yes & please remind me why?
7,108 votes were cast

3. Do you delete an ex after a break-up?
32% – Hell Yes!
21% – No, I wanna stalk!
47% – Let them suffer. I’m hot
8,244 votes were cast

Let me know if you’ve tried it, and how it turned out! I’m interested to know! In fact, all in the name of research, I’m going to go on a ‘date’ with two of my exes to see if I can tolerate them/ not want to throw a pint in their face… I’ll let you know how I go next week! (NOTE: I’m not holding my breath)

Here’s a teaser for you:

We rewind to two weeks ago…

We rewind to two weeks ago…

Remember the post about me passing out fully clothed after a particularly heavy night out? Ring any bells? Here it is just in case you’ve forgotten.

So I left you with a teaser about how I had more to update on and a chance encounter, and then I left you hanging for almost two weeks… sincerest of apologies!

Here is a brief overview of the goings on in my life in the days following that fateful night…

10:00 A.M. I woke from a not so peaceful slumber (more like coma), I had an excitement in my belly, couldn’t remember why… It’ll come to me…
12:30 P.M. I get changed into my bikini, don my latest cute maxi, coordinate with my fried Sally as today is Sunday, it is Sydney and it’s summer, cue – Marco Polo at The Ivy yyippeeeeeee

The Ivy pool is the most aesthetically pleasing venue in Sydney – the talent is immense! The bar scales four floors and two buildings. Downstairs you can catch the business types catching a cosmo after a long day at the office. By night it is transformed into a hub for the beautiful people. On Sundays the pool is transformed to a haven suntrap where the drinks flow and the people mingle.

Beautiful people all around – doesn’t make you feel insecure at all, yeah right!

1:30 Arrive at The Ivy pool, it’s 35 degrees and the bods are out, immense scenes surround Sally and I as we take advantage of the free drinks, the view (the guys are unreal) and feel very self-conscious – the girls are all size 6 – 10 (As I’m a 12 I’m positively in the ‘curvy/ carrying a little extra holiday weight right now variety) .
4:00 Get a call from Liam (we’ve spoke about him before many a time, here, here and here..) he’s at The Ivy too – yippee. Tells me the only reason he came was cos he knew I’d be there, result!
8:00 Head home after one too many cocktails, it’s a Sunday night and I have work tomorrow. I get a text from Liam asking me to meet up, I’m passed out on the sofa before I can respond.
7:15 A.M. Why do I do this to myself, on a school night? My head hurts, I don’t recall most of the previous day and I have a WIP at 8:30 that morning, noooooooo!
8:30 A.M. – 6:00 P.M – Dying a slow and painful death
6:30pm Arrive home after a LONG day at the office, all I want to do is eat and sleep.
8:00 Take myself off to bed to watch a bit of Gossip Girl (which I heart BTW).
9:00 Get a text off my friend, she advises me that she has something that she thinks I should know; Liam has been in contact with her and has been asking her out. Fail one! He also said that there’s nothing going on between me and him – Epic fail! Now tell me if I’m wrong, surely there’s a code about asking out your ex’s mates? Apparently not!
10:00 Type out angry text to Liam asking him at what point he felt it was cool to ask out my friend.
10:30 Save to drafts as feel it isn’t appropriate to send…
10:31 Hit send and think F*** it!

9:00 A.M. Decide I maybe shouldn’t have text Liam
1:15 P.M. Still haven’t heard from Liam
5:45 Still haven’t heard from Liam
10:45 P.M. Still haven’t heard from Liam.
11:10 Yup still no… you know!

7:35 A.M. Decide I’m the biggest idiot ever
5:55 P.M. It’s ok though, after mentally beating myself up all day, I remember that there are good things in my life, my brother arrives tomorrow! I haven’t seen him for nearly two years!
7:30 Julie texts, she’s heading out with Helen our friend tomorrow to say bye before she departs on her travels around the world with her fella. She asks if I want to come, she casually drops in that my ten-year crush will be there also… SOLD!
10:00 Crash out in front on TV after a few too many wines and far too many episodes of ‘Come Dine with Me Australia – where do they find these people?!’

So on a final note before the most romantic weekend of the year… WHATEVER…

I used to be like this…

Then I met a girl…

She was like this…

Together, we were like this…

When she accepted my proposal, I was like this…

I used to talk to her all night like this…

And at the office I used to do this…

When my friends saw my girlfriend, they stared like this…

And I used to react like this…

But on Valentines Day,
she received a red rose from someone else like this…

And she was like this..

And I was like this…

Which later led to this…

and this…

I felt like doing this…

I started doing this…

(I’m not sure of the source of this, it isn’t my own! If anyone knows it please send so I can credit them!)

What do you call the Grinch of Valentine’s Day? Spinch? (Cross between a spinster and a Grinch?) No, not cool?! Never mind…

Now don’t get me wrong I’m not a complete anti-Valentine’s Day ogre, I have had many loved up Valentine’s Day dates that have been just… lovely! Don’t you think though that forced fun is just nauseating? I get the concept, it’s a great way to show the one you love that you care, blah blah blah. How about we try this for a concept, it shouldn’t just be on one day a year that this happens because a well-known card company can cash in on GFs guilt trips and un-spontaneous other halves.

Us girls like to be surprised and wooed – it’s a long time since I’ve been wooed let me tell ya! The past four Valentine’s Days I’ve spent with the girls, hiring a fun fest film, cooking an amazing dinner and putting the world to right. Honestly – the best Valentines Day’s ever!

For those of you that are loved up however (how about you get a room so you can show each other how much you care, rather than parading it in front of the rest of the human race?) Just kidding of course…

I had a particularly sickening dinner with my family last week, my mum has arrived in Sydney after not seeing her for 12 months. We went for dinner at The Spot in Randwick, a cool place with a number of fantastic restaurants. We headed to Chao Praya, a lovely BYO Thai restaurant (not make sure you let the chef know how spicy you like your dishes, they can go slightly overboard on the chilli front if you’re not careful!). There was a couple sat next to us eating their dinner whilst holding hands and eating with one hand, I mean COME ON! That’s just silly!

So this Valentine’s Day I will again stick with tradition and have a great girly night in with my bessies, we will be making sure we have the best of the best chocolate. (FYI the chocolate over here SUCKS compared to chocolate in the UK – they put a substance in it to stop it melting at room temperature, which results in a not nice consistency! I miss Galaxy!!) SO with this in mind, when you do find a good chocolate, you tend to stick with it and buy it by the shed load! Ha!

I’m impartial to the odd Cherry Ripe – big fan! They’re my main chocolaty downfall I tell ya! Kind of a cross between a Bounty and a Raspberry Ripple, if you can imagine such a thing, yum!

However, I recently received some AMAZING chocolates from one of my friends to sample, I have to say, the crown for the ‘Top Aussie Chocolate’ is under stiff competition. I had the immense pleasure of sampling the  GUYLIAN Belgian Chocolate Sea Shells, each filled with a delicious, roasted hazelnut praliné made to the original signature recipe. Unbelievable, they literally melt in your mouth!

If you’re in a  relationship and go for all that mushy, gushy stuff, Guylian’s ‘I love you’ gift box is the perfect gift. They show that you care and then you can munch them all yourself! It’s the thought that counts right?!

They’re made from West African cocoa beans apparently and are 100% cocoa butter (with no vegetable fats – great not a big fan of fats are we now??).

Whether it be a little treat for yourself other half, a delightful after dinner chocolate or something delicious to share with friends (actually scrap that I don’t do sharing of the food type variety) when entertaining, Guylian products suit every occasion.

Guylian offer the following core products throughout Coles, Woolworths and other selected retailers across Australia.

  • Guylian Sea Shells 65g, RRP $3.59
  • Guylian Les Exclusives 315g, RRP $18.29
  • Guylian La Trufflina 90g, RRP $7.99
  • Guylian Sea Shells 250g, RRP $13.99

The ‘I Love You’ 100g gift box is stocked nationally in Woolworths with an RRP of $7.99.

Guylian supports the Project Seahorse charity with every box of Guylian Sea Shells purchased across Australia and the globe. Project Seahorse is an organisation dedicated to preserving seahorses (who doesn’t’love seahorses ey?! Do your bit and reward yourself with a chocolaty treat!) and other marine life worldwide. For further information, visit www.projectseahorse.org.

However if you are loved up this St Valentine’s Day and you want to woo your senor, I can highly recommend Sydney tapas hot spot Argyle Bazar. Famed chef Miguel Maestre (interview with Miguel to follow, I heart that name FYI!) and his team have designed a set menu to fire hearts and fuel romance – Spanish style!

If you’re a fan of booze and Spain, they have really hit the nail on the head as the dining experience will begin with a ‘Lover’s Sangria’ on arrival, followed by yummy tapas dishes to share and finally Miguel’s endorphin-releasing ‘Trilogy of Chocolate Mousse’.

St Valentine’s set menu $75 pp

Glass of Lovers Sangria on arrival
3 tapas dishes
“Triology of Chocolate Mousse”

(Belgium White Chocolate Mousse with toasted Cardamon, Milk Chocolate Mousse with Goji Berr and Valhrona Dark Chocolate Mousse with Black Cumin)

In case there’s more than one Valentine to woo (you know my thoughts on playing the field people!!)… Dine at Argyle Bazar between Wednesday 9th and Sunday 13th February and receive a complimentary ‘Lover’s Sangria’.
