In a world where serial dating is considered the ‘norm’ for many 18 – 35 year olds, looks and appearance increasingly count for much more than just finding a ‘mate’.
A recent article in commuter magazine, Nine to Five called ‘Sexed Up’ cited sociologist Dr Catherine Hakim, from the London School of Economics, who stated that appearance and sex appeal have become just as important as educational qualifications in today’s dating scene.
By contrast, a survey by FHM in 2008, which drew over 60,000 respondents, told a very different story, FHM editor Ben Smithurst said the findings were good news for women.
“A piddling 20 per cent of readers selected our size eight model pictured as their ideal girl physique, while the size 12 and 14 models easily outscored their skinnier rival,” he said.
He continued: “Which proves one thing, ladies: crack a beer, hoe into a hamburger and we’ll love you just as much.”
Hmm really? This poses the question though, is this still true of today’s society? I think not… An article on thedailytelegraph.com.au today revealed that a nightclub in Canada has come under fire for a Facebook invitation that specified: “No fat girls allowed”. Charming!
It’s concerning that this trend could continue to grow as we’re increasingly judged on the way we present ourselves, not only in a professional environment but also to the objects of our desire.
Although it is a fierce game, dating certainly can be fun and popular culture certainly emanates this perception. TV Shows such as Sex and the City and Cougar Town depict the carefree exciting city living lifestyle of the ‘fun loving beautiful singles’.
It seems that every single girl in her twenties and thirties wants to emulate Carrie Bradshaw in the dating stakes. Recently Australian dating sites alone have millions of members that are flirting like never before, on-line dating site RSVP now has over 1,100 new singles signing up daily and is Australia’s longest standing dating site with over 1.6 million members and climbing.
Are the e-bacheloresses successes reliant on having a great profile picture? This has to be the first stumbling block for the many single guys vetting potential future dates.
